What is a word of the year?

A word of the year is a single word you carry through the next twelve months instead of a list of resolutions. It is easier to remember, harder to break, and it works on the days a goal would not. When a decision comes up, you ask whether it fits your word.

Resolutions tend to fail because they are specific and brittle. Miss three gym sessions and "go to the gym" is broken. A word like Restore or Rise bends with the year. It can mean a run, an early night or saying no to a meeting, depending on the week.

This quiz finds your word from what you want next year, how this year felt, and how bold you are feeling about it.

How the year in one word quiz works

You answer eight quick questions: what you want more of, how this year felt, a door to walk through, your biggest goal, where you want to spend more time, how bold you feel on a five-point slider, one thing to let go of, and a colour for 2027. Then you add your birth date.

We use our own proprietary structure built on five poles: Change, Build, Rest, Depth and Others. Each answer feeds one or more poles. Your strongest pole picks the family of words, and your second strongest picks the word within it. If your top two poles are tied, your sun sign's element settles it, with fire signs drawn to Leap and water signs to Deepen.

Your three themes are your three strongest poles, so you can see what is driving the word.

Every word you can get

There are nineteen words in five families. Here is each one and what it means for your year.

Change words. Leap: the year your nerve catches up with your ideas. Roam: the year you give yourself a longer horizon. Spark: the year a person lights the next step.

Build words. Rise: the year the work shows. Anchor: the year you choose a place to stand. Master: the year you go deeper on one thing. Gather: the year you build the room, not just the plan.

Rest words. Bloom: the year you let something grow without forcing it. Simplify: the year you put down what you do not mean. Restore: the year you get your hours back. Nest: the year home becomes the project.

Depth words. Explore: the year you follow one real question. Craft: the year you finish the careful version. Deepen: the year you stay with it. Listen: the year you hear the quieter brief.

Others words. Open: the year you say yes to the right invitation. Unite: the year the group becomes a we. Belong: the year you stop auditioning. Connect: the year the useful conversation happens.

What do the five themes mean?

Your themes are the five forces behind every word, and your top three show what your year is really about.

  • Change: new places, new starts, the itch to do something different. You want adventure and you are ready to move.
  • Build: progress you can point to. You want to finish things, grow something and see the results.
  • Rest: calm, space and recovery. This year was busy and next year needs to be gentler.
  • Depth: learning, focus and quiet time alone. You want to go further into fewer things.
  • Others: friends, family and belonging. Next year is about the people around you.

A word from the Change family with Rest as a second theme feels very different from one with Build. That mix is what makes your word yours.

How to live by your word for 2027

Put your word somewhere you will see it every day, and use it as a filter when you make plans.

  • Make it your phone lock screen or write it on the first page of a new notebook.
  • At the start of each month, choose one small thing that fits your word.
  • When an invitation or opportunity comes up, ask whether it moves you towards your word or away from it.
  • Share your card so the people around you know what you are aiming for. They will help.
  • Check in at midsummer. If the word still fits, keep going. If the year has changed, take the quiz again.

Then try the birth chart calculator. It adds your sun, moon and rising signs to the picture of the year ahead.

Why one word works better than New Year's resolutions

One word works better than resolutions because it gives you a direction instead of a test you can fail. A resolution is pass or fail, and by the middle of January most people feel they have already failed. A word simply asks you to lean a little more one way, every time you get the chance.

It also fits real life. Some weeks are full and some are flattened by a cold. "Run three times a week" falls apart in a bad week. "Restore" still works: in a bad week it means an early night, and in a good one it means a long walk on Saturday.

A word is easier to share, too. Tell a friend your resolutions and they forget them by February. Tell them your word is Gather and they will invite you to things all year. Tell your partner it is Simplify and they will start noticing when you overcommit.

Most of all, a word is honest about what you actually want. The quiz builds it from your answers about this year and the next, so it reflects where you are, not where an advert says you should be.

Questions people ask

Your 2027 in One Word: FAQs

Is the year in one word quiz free?

Yes. Eight questions and your birth date, about two minutes, and your word, themes and share card are free.

How many words are there?

Nineteen, in five families: Change, Build, Rest, Depth and Others.

Is the word a prediction?

No. It is a generous label for the answers you just gave, a word to steer the year by.

Why does it ask for my birth date?

Your sun sign's element settles a tie between your top two themes, so a close call still lands on the word that suits you.

Can I share my word?

Yes. You get a card that reads 'My 2027 word is', followed by your word in capitals, ready to post or send.

Will the page change next year?

The address stays the same and the year in the title moves on, so you can come back each New Year.

What is the difference between a word of the year and a resolution?

A resolution is a rule you can break. A word is a direction you can keep following, whatever the week brings.
