What this word asks of you

OPEN asks you to let things in. New people, new ideas, new opportunities, new feelings. Perhaps you have been closed for a while, protecting yourself after a hard time, or simply comfortable in routines that keep the door shut.

This year asks you to open the door. It is a word of change and connection together. Say yes to the invitation. Try the thing. Share the feeling. Listen to the idea that challenges you. Opening up can feel vulnerable, and it is. It is also how every good thing in life arrives. You do not have to fling the door wide on day one. Just open it a little more each month, and see who and what comes in.

Your first three months

In January, notice where you are closed. Where do you say no automatically? Which feelings do you keep to yourself? Which people do you keep at arm's length? Write it down honestly.

In February, open one small door each week. Say yes to one invitation you would normally decline. Share one feeling with someone you trust. Try one new thing. In March, notice what happened. Who came closer? What did you learn? How did it feel? Most of the time, opening up turns out better than you feared. By spring you will feel lighter and more connected, and ready to open a bigger door.

Your relationships

OPEN is a big word for relationships. It asks you to let people see the real you: the worries, the hopes, the silly side, the soft side.

Tell a friend something true. Say I love you more often. Ask for help when you need it. Let new people into your life: a colleague, a neighbour, someone from a class. If you are single, OPEN is a powerful word for romance. Say yes to dates, let people get to know you, be honest about what you want. If you are partnered, open up new conversations, about your dreams and fears. The people who know you best by the end of 2027 will be the ones you let in this year.

Your work

At work, OPEN means saying yes to new things. New projects, new people, new ways of working. Share your ideas in meetings. Ask for feedback and listen to it. Collaborate more.

Be open to opportunities you would normally dismiss: a role in a different team, a project outside your expertise, a conversation with someone senior. Be open to change in how your team works. Openness makes you easier to work with and more likely to be offered interesting things. If you are thinking about a career change, be open to options you have not considered. By December, your working life will be wider, richer and full of new connections.

A ritual to keep it

Every Monday, choose one door to open this week. Write it on a sticky note: a yes to say, a feeling to share, a person to reach out to, a new thing to try.

On Sunday, look at the note and ask how it went. Keep the notes in a jar. Over the year, the jar fills with fifty small acts of openness. When you feel yourself closing up again, take out a few notes and read them. They will remind you how much good came from letting things in. At the end of 2027, empty the jar and read them all. It will be quite a year.
