Driver, Explorer, Analyst, Connector: the four work styles
Updated
The four work styles describe how you naturally get things done, based on two questions: do you move at a decisive pace or a deliberate one, and do you focus first on the task or on the people? Drivers are decisive and task-focused, Explorers are decisive and people-focused, Analysts are deliberate and task-focused, and Connectors are deliberate and people-focused.

Most teams have all four, and most workplace friction comes from styles misreading each other. The Driver thinks the Analyst is stalling. The Analyst thinks the Driver is reckless. Both are just working the way they work best. To find your own style, take the work style quiz.
The two questions behind the four styles
Picture a square with two lines across it.
- Pace runs from decisive to deliberate. Decisive people want to choose and move. Deliberate people want to understand first and then commit.
- Focus runs from task to people. Task-focused people look at the work: the plan, the numbers, the result. People-focused people look at the team: who is involved, how they feel, who needs to be on board.
Each corner of the square is a style. Where you land is your primary style. The corner you lean towards next is your secondary streak, which shades how your main style shows up.
Driver: decisive and task-focused
You are a Driver if you want the goal, the deadline and the go-ahead, then you want to get on with it. Long meetings test your patience. You would rather make a good decision now than a perfect one next month.
Drivers are the people who get projects over the line. They take ownership, make the call when nobody else will and keep momentum going. Under pressure, they can come across as blunt or impatient, and they sometimes forget to bring people with them.
Working with a Driver: lead with the point, bring options rather than problems and give them a clear decision to make. Read more on the Driver page.
Explorer: decisive and people-focused
You are an Explorer if you are full of ideas and want to rally people around them. You think out loud, love a brainstorm and get bored once the exciting part is done. You can sell a plan before it fully exists.
Explorers bring energy and vision. They open doors, spot opportunities and get people excited. Their weak spot is follow-through: the details and the final ten steps are where their attention drifts.
Working with an Explorer: give them room to talk ideas through, share their enthusiasm, and pair them with someone who loves finishing. Read more on the Explorer page.
Analyst: deliberate and task-focused
You are an Analyst if you want to get it right. You read the brief carefully, ask the questions nobody else thought of and spot the flaw in the spreadsheet. You prefer to work quietly and present something finished.
Analysts protect teams from expensive mistakes. They bring rigour, accuracy and depth. Under pressure they can slow down to gather more information, and they may look reserved or critical to faster colleagues.
Working with an Analyst: give them time and detail, put requests in writing and do not ask for a decision in the corridor. Read more on the Analyst page.
Connector: deliberate and people-focused
You are a Connector if you care how the team is doing and want everyone to be heard. You notice who has gone quiet, smooth over tension and build the relationships that keep a group together. You prefer agreement to speed.
Connectors are the glue. They build trust, support colleagues and make teams pleasant places to be. Their challenge is saying no, delivering hard news and pushing a decision through when not everyone is happy.
Working with a Connector: ask how they feel about a plan as well as what they think, give them time to consult and make it safe to disagree. Read more on the Connector page.
Your secondary streak, and how we find it
Nobody is pure. Your secondary streak is the style you lean towards next, and it changes the flavour of your main one.
A Driver with an Analyst streak moves fast but checks the numbers first. A Driver with an Explorer streak moves fast and brings people along with a story. A Connector with an Analyst streak supports the team through careful planning. A Connector with an Explorer streak supports the team by lifting the mood.
If you read your main profile and think "mostly, but not quite", your streak is usually the missing piece.
Our work style quiz is our own questionnaire: twenty-four statements, about four minutes. Each statement belongs to one of the four styles. Your primary style is the one you score highest on, and your secondary streak is the next highest. Your result places you as a dot on the square, so you can see how strongly you sit in your corner.
Using work styles in a team
The real value of work styles comes when a whole team knows them.
- Share a group link. Everyone takes the quiz and appears on one square. Only styles are shown, never anyone's individual answers.
- Look for gaps. A team of Drivers and Explorers will start fast and leave loose ends. A team of Analysts and Connectors will make careful, kind decisions slowly.
- Name the friction. "I'm an Analyst, so I'll need a day on this" ends a lot of quiet resentment.
- Match the task to the style. Explorers to kick-offs, Analysts to reviews, Connectors to onboarding, Drivers to deadlines.
- Stretch on purpose. Every style can borrow from the others. A Driver can ask one more question. An Analyst can make one decision faster.
Work style tells you how you work. For what you want to work on, pair it with the career interest test. Or take the work style quiz now and find your corner.
