What is a work style?
Your work style is the way you naturally get things done: the pace you like to move at and where your attention goes. Some people want a decision now and some want the data first. Some keep their eyes on the deliverable and some keep their eyes on the team.
Your style shows up everywhere. It is in how you run a meeting, how you react when the plan changes on a Thursday afternoon, and which part of a project you volunteer for. It is also behind most of the friction in a team, because two strong styles can look at the same problem and see completely different priorities.
Knowing your style helps you choose roles that suit you and explain yourself to colleagues who work differently.
How does the work style map work?
The quiz places you on two axes: pace and focus. Pace runs from decisive, where you move quickly and push for a call, to deliberate, where you prefer to think it through. Focus runs from task, where your attention is on the work itself, to people, where it is on the team.
Those two axes make a square with four corners, and each corner is a style. Decisive and task-focused is Driver. Decisive and people-focused is Explorer. Deliberate and task-focused is Analyst. Deliberate and people-focused is Connector.
You land on that square with a primary style, the one you scored highest on, and a secondary streak, the one that came next.
What are the four work styles?
Every result is one of these four, paired with one of the other three as your streak.
- Driver: you set the direction and judge yourself by results. You push for a decision, volunteer for the hardest problems and get frustrated by slow progress. Teams move faster with you in them.
- Explorer: you are energised by brand-new projects and full of ideas. You connect thoughts from different fields, improvise happily when plans change and would rather experiment than follow the manual.
- Analyst: you want the data before you make a call. You like clear processes, double-check your work and spot the flaws others miss. Your work holds up because you went deep.
- Connector: you make sure everyone in the room is heard. You build relationships across teams, notice when a colleague is struggling and smooth over tension before it grows.
Your streak matters. A Driver with an Analyst streak pushes hard but checks the numbers. A Driver with a Connector streak pushes hard and brings people along.
How is the work style quiz scored?
We use our own proprietary structure: six statements for each of the four styles, twenty-four in all, each rated on how much you agree. Each style gets an average score.
Your highest average is your primary style and your second highest is your streak. Your position on the map reflects the pace and focus of your primary style, so you can see at a glance where you sit relative to colleagues.
How to use your work style at work
Use your style to ask for what helps you do your best work. A Driver might ask for clear outcomes and freedom on method. An Analyst might ask for the brief a day early. A Connector might ask to be involved before decisions are made, not after. An Explorer might ask for the first phase of a project and a partner who loves finishing.
Use it to read other people too. When an Analyst asks for more detail, they are not stalling. When a Driver cuts the meeting short, they are not being rude. When a Connector checks how everyone feels, they are not wasting time. Each style is protecting something the team needs.
The strongest teams have all four. If yours is missing one, you now know what to look out for.
Which work style makes the best leader?
Every style can lead well. Each one simply leads differently, and knows where to borrow from the others.
- Driver leaders set a clear direction and keep things moving. People always know what the goal is. Their growth edge is slowing down long enough to bring the quieter voices with them.
- Explorer leaders create energy and possibility. People feel part of something new. Their growth edge is finishing, so the best ones hire or partner with someone who loves the follow-through.
- Analyst leaders make sound, well-reasoned decisions. People trust the plan because it has been checked. Their growth edge is deciding before every question is answered.
- Connector leaders build loyal, honest teams. People feel heard and stay. Their growth edge is having the hard conversation early rather than smoothing it over.
Knowing your style as a leader tells you which part of the job will feel natural and which part to plan for deliberately.
How to work with someone who has a different style
Meet them on their axis first. If they are faster than you, give the headline before the reasoning. If they are slower, send the thinking in advance so they can arrive ready. If they focus on people and you focus on the task, start with how the change affects the team before you get to the plan.
Opposite corners clash the most and complement each other the most. A Driver and a Connector, or an Explorer and an Analyst, can drive each other up the wall or cover every gap between them. A group link lets your whole team see the map together, which makes that conversation far easier.
A good first step is a short team chat: each person names their style, one thing that helps them do their best work and one habit of theirs that might frustrate others. Ten minutes of that saves weeks of quiet misunderstanding.
Every result
The 4 results, and what each one means
- DriverYou work at pace and you work for results. You set the direction, push for the decision and take on the hardest problem in the room, because slow progress feels worse to you than a wrong turn you can correct.
- ExplorerYou are the spark. You move fast, generate ideas faster, and love a brand-new project with people to share it with. Once the path is set, your attention is already drifting to the next possibility.
- AnalystYou get it right. You want the data before the decision, you prefer depth to speed, and you spot the flaw everyone else missed, which makes you the person teams trust with what really matters.
- ConnectorYou are the person who makes sure everyone is heard. You build relationships across teams, notice when someone is struggling and smooth tension before it becomes trouble, and teams quietly rely on you more than they realise.
