What is an aesthetic?

An aesthetic is the overall look and feeling you are drawn to, carried across everything: your clothes, your room, the café you pick, the music you put on while you cook. It is less a dress code and more a mood you keep choosing.

You probably already have one, even if you have never named it. It is the reason you walk past ten shops and stop at the eleventh, or why your friends send you a photo of a lamp and say "this is so you". Naming it is useful. It makes shopping easier, helps you edit a wardrobe or a room, and explains why some things feel right the moment you see them.

Most people are a blend, and that is the fun of it. A minimalist with a coastal streak is a very different person from a minimalist with a Scandi one.

How the aesthetic quiz works

You make twelve quick choices, one at a time: a living room, a café, a weekend, shoes, a palette, a book, a holiday, a soundtrack, a plant, a dinner, a typeface and a coat. Each option is an original drawing made for this site, and each one carries one or two aesthetics.

We use our own proprietary structure: every pick adds a point to each aesthetic it carries, and then each total is divided by how often that aesthetic appears across the quiz. That way a style that turns up in lots of options does not win just by showing up more. The highest score is your aesthetic, and the second highest is your hint.

Do not overthink it. The first picture you like is usually the right answer. If two feel equally you, go with the one you would actually live with.

All twelve aesthetics explained

Here is every result you can get, and what it says about you.

  • Cottagecore: dried flowers, sage and cream, bread rising on the windowsill. You want a slower, softer, handmade life, and you probably already own a wicker basket.
  • Dark Academia: wood panelling, leather-bound books, oxblood and bottle green. You love ideas, old rooms and a good typewriter font, and you dress for the library even on a Sunday.
  • Minimalist: white walls, one perfect bench, one sculptural cactus. You find calm in space, and you would rather own five things you love than fifty you tolerate.
  • Scandi: candles, sheepskins, clean lines and cinnamon buns. You want warmth without clutter, and your home is the cosiest place anyone visits in winter.
  • Coastal: linen, driftwood, navy and sand. You are happiest near water, in clothes that dry quickly and a house full of light.
  • Boho: rattan, macramé, trailing plants and woven sandals. You collect, you wander, and every corner of your space has a story from somewhere.
  • Old Money: loafers, tweed, navy and an olive tree in a pot. You like quality that does not shout, and things that look better the older they get.
  • Retro Glam: gilt mirrors, Art Deco letters, martinis and jazz. You dress for an entrance and believe any evening can become an occasion.
  • Maximalist: pink velvet, patterned walls, every shelf full. You love colour, more is genuinely more, and your home is never, ever boring.
  • Y2K: chunky platform trainers, bubble letters, hot pink and chrome. You are playful, bold and allergic to beige.
  • Streetwear: oversized puffers, trainer drops, graphic novels and street food. You are tuned in to what is next and you wear it before anyone else.
  • Grunge: battered boots, black and oxblood, a sweaty basement gig. You like things lived-in, loud and real, and you would choose character over polish every time.

What does my runner-up aesthetic mean?

Your runner-up is the second flavour in your style, and it often explains the bits your main aesthetic does not. A Dark Academia result with an Old Money hint leans towards tailoring and good wool. The same result with a Grunge hint leans towards band T-shirts under the blazer.

Pay attention to it when you are shopping or decorating. Your main aesthetic sets the base, and the runner-up tells you where to add contrast. Minimalist with a Coastal hint wants white walls and linen. Minimalist with a Scandi hint wants white walls and a candle in every window.

If your top two feel equally true, you have found a blend, and blends make the most interesting rooms and wardrobes.

How to use your aesthetic

Your aesthetic is most useful as a filter. Before you buy anything, ask whether it fits the result you got. You will spend less and like what you own more.

  • Wardrobe: pick three colours from your aesthetic's palette and build around them.
  • Home: choose one room and make it fully yours first. A bedroom is easiest.
  • Gifts: send the result to friends so they know what to get you.
  • Inspiration: search your aesthetic's name with "room" or "outfit" and save only what makes you stop.

When you are done, the personal values test is a good next step. It shows what you care about underneath the look.

How do I find my aesthetic?

You find your aesthetic by noticing what you choose when nobody is watching, not what you think you should like. The quiz does exactly that: twelve quick choices with no time to second-guess.

You can also check your own life for clues. Look at the last five things you saved, the café you always go back to, and the oldest thing in your wardrobe that you still wear. They usually share a palette, a mood or an era. Then take the quiz and see if it names what you have been collecting all along.

Questions people ask

What's Your Aesthetic?: FAQs

Is the aesthetic quiz free?

Yes. Twelve picture choices, about two minutes, and your result is free.

How many aesthetics are there in the quiz?

Twelve: Cottagecore, Dark Academia, Minimalist, Scandi, Coastal, Boho, Old Money, Retro Glam, Maximalist, Y2K, Streetwear and Grunge.

Where do the pictures come from?

They are original drawings made for this quiz. Nothing is scraped from anywhere else.

Can I have more than one aesthetic?

Yes. You get a main aesthetic and a runner-up hint, and the blend of the two is your real style.

Why did I get an aesthetic I did not expect?

Your picks add up across all twelve choices, so small leanings build. The surprise often names something you were already drawn to without noticing.

What is the difference between Minimalist and Scandi?

Minimalist is about space and very few objects. Scandi keeps the clean lines and adds warmth: wood, candles, sheepskins and cosy evenings.
