What is the Enneagram?
The Enneagram is a map of nine personality types, each built around a core motivation: the thing you are quietly trying to get, or avoid, in almost everything you do. Where other models describe what you do, the Enneagram describes why you do it.
That is why it lands so hard. Two people can both stay late at work, one because the job is not yet right and the other because they want to be seen to deliver. Same behaviour, different engine. The Enneagram names the engine.
The nine types sit around a circle, and each one borrows a little from the types on either side. That borrowing is your wing, and it is why two people of the same type can still feel quite different.
The circle also falls into three groups of three. Types 8, 9 and 1 are the gut types, who meet the world through instinct and a sense of control. Types 2, 3 and 4 are the heart types, tuned to image, feeling and how they are seen. Types 5, 6 and 7 are the head types, who meet the world through thinking, planning and a watchful eye on what might happen next. If you are torn between two results, checking which group feels most like home is often the quickest way to choose.
What are the nine Enneagram types?
Each type has a name and a core drive. Here is every possible result in a line or two.
- Type 1, the Reformer: you notice what is off, and you would like it put right. High standards, a strong inner critic and a real sense of fairness.
- Type 2, the Helper: you are the person people call, and that is not an accident. You sense what others need before they ask, and you find it harder to ask for yourself.
- Type 3, the Achiever: you like a visible result, and you will rearrange the day to get one. Ambitious, adaptable and restless when nothing is moving.
- Type 4, the Individualist: you would rather be exact about yourself than easy to file. Deep feelings, a strong eye and a need for things to be authentic.
- Type 5, the Investigator: you go deep, and you guard the door. You love knowing a subject thoroughly and need plenty of private time to do it.
- Type 6, the Loyalist: you prepare, and you are loyal to the people inside the circle. You spot the risk others miss and trust slowly but fully.
- Type 7, the Enthusiast: you keep a next thing ready, which is its own kind of courage. Optimistic, quick and allergic to boredom.
- Type 8, the Challenger: you will say the thing, and you will stand in front of your people. Direct, protective and impossible to push around.
- Type 9, the Peacemaker: you can see every side, which is why the room stays in it. Easy-going, steady and the reason arguments calm down.
What is an Enneagram wing?
Your wing is the type next to yours on the circle that you also score highly on. Every type has two neighbours, and your wing is whichever of the two scored higher.
It is written as your type, a "w", then the wing: 4w5 or 4w3, for example. A 4w5 tends to be more private and thoughtful, turning feelings into ideas. A 4w3 tends to be more expressive and outward, turning feelings into something to show. Same core, different flavour.
Your result also shows your runner-up type, the second-highest score anywhere on the circle. That is often the type people mistake you for, or the one you lean on under pressure.
How is the Enneagram test scored?
We use our own proprietary structure: six statements for each of the nine types, fifty-four in all, each rated on how much you agree. Your type is the one with the highest average score. Your wing is the higher of its two neighbours, and your runner-up is the second-highest type overall.
When your top two types are very close, your result tells you it is a close call and gives you a short tiebreak: a few extra questions aimed at exactly those two types. That way a near draw ends with a clear answer rather than a coin toss.
How accurate is the Enneagram test?
The test is as accurate as your answers are honest, and the Enneagram rewards honesty more than most. Many of the statements describe motives people prefer not to admit, such as feeling hurt when help goes unnoticed or not being able to relax until a job is done properly.
Answer for how you have been most of your adult life, not how you are at work this week. If your result feels slightly uncomfortable as well as familiar, that is usually a good sign you have found your type. Read your runner-up too, and keep the one that explains your reasons, not just your habits.
How to use your Enneagram type
Use your type to catch your own patterns early. A Type 1 who knows their inner critic gets loud under stress can hear it starting and choose to stop at good enough. A Type 9 who knows they go along to keep the peace can practise saying what they want first.
It is just as useful with other people. Knowing a partner is a 6 explains why they want the back-up plan before they can enjoy the plan. Knowing a colleague is an 8 explains why they push back hardest on the ideas they respect most.
Start small. Pick one habit your type leans on too hard, notice it three times this week, and try the opposite once.

The 9 results, and what each one means
- Type 1: ReformerYou notice what is off, and you would like it put right. Underneath the high standards is a person who badly wants to be good, and wants the world to be a little fairer than it is.
- Type 2: HelperYou are the person people call, and that is not an accident. You notice what others need before they say it, and you quietly hope someone will one day notice you in the same way.
- Type 3: AchieverYou like a visible result, and you will rearrange the day to get one. You are driven, adaptable and very good at making things happen, and somewhere under the momentum is a wish to be valued for who you are.
- Type 4: IndividualistYou would rather be exact about yourself than easy to file. You feel things deeply, you notice what others miss, and you want a life that is unmistakably your own.
- Type 5: InvestigatorYou go deep, and you guard the door. You would rather understand something properly than talk about it loosely, and you need room to think before you give anything away.
- Type 6: LoyalistYou prepare, and you are loyal to the people inside the circle. You spot the risk before anyone else does, and once you trust someone, you are theirs for good.
- Type 7: EnthusiastYou keep a next thing ready, which is its own kind of courage. You find possibility everywhere, you bring energy into every room, and you would rather live fully than play it safe.
- Type 8: ChallengerYou will say the thing, and you will stand in front of your people. You are strong, direct and protective, and beneath the armour is a big heart you guard carefully.
- Type 9: PeacemakerYou can see every side, which is why the room stays in it. You bring calm, patience and acceptance wherever you go, and your own voice deserves the same space you give everyone else.
