What is my Chinese zodiac animal?

Your Chinese zodiac animal is set by the lunar year you were born in, and there are twelve: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. They repeat in that order, one animal per year, on a twelve-year cycle.

The catch is that the Chinese year does not start on 1 January. It starts at the lunar new year, which falls on a different date each year somewhere between late January and mid February. If your birthday falls before that date, you belong to the previous year's animal. That is why so many January babies have been told the wrong animal for years.

Enter your birth date and we check it against the lunar new year for that year, then give you the right animal. No mental arithmetic, no squinting at a chart of dates.

What does my element mean?

Your element adds a second layer to your animal, and there are five: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Each element rules two years in a row, giving a ten-year cycle that runs alongside the twelve animals. Together they make sixty combinations, so a Fire Horse and a Water Horse are cousins, not twins.

  • Wood: growth, generosity and fresh ideas. Wood signs are cooperative and keep reaching for more.
  • Fire: passion, courage and warmth. Fire signs lead from the front and light up a room.
  • Earth: stability, patience and good sense. Earth signs are the ones everyone relies on.
  • Metal: strength, focus and high standards. Metal signs are decisive and finish what they start.
  • Water: intuition, adaptability and depth. Water signs read people well and find a way around anything.

Your result names both, such as Fire Horse or Metal Rat, so you get the full picture rather than half of it.

The twelve Chinese zodiac animals explained

Each animal has its own temperament. Here is what each one brings.

  • Rat: quick, resourceful and sociable. You spot the opportunity first and know exactly who to call.
  • Ox: steady, patient and dependable. You do the work properly, and people trust you for it.
  • Tiger: brave, bold and magnetic. You act on instinct and protect the people you love.
  • Rabbit: gentle, tactful and stylish. You keep the peace and make every room feel calmer.
  • Dragon: confident, ambitious and lucky. You think big and other people follow.
  • Snake: wise, calm and perceptive. You notice everything and say only what matters.
  • Horse: energetic, free and warm. You need room to run and you bring everyone along.
  • Goat: creative, kind and easy-going. You make things beautiful and look after your people.
  • Monkey: clever, playful and inventive. You solve the puzzle and make it look fun.
  • Rooster: sharp, honest and hard-working. You notice the detail and you say it straight.
  • Dog: loyal, fair and protective. You stand up for people and keep your promises.
  • Pig: generous, warm and good-humoured. You enjoy life fully and share it freely.

I was born in January or February. Which animal am I?

If your birthday falls before that year's lunar new year, you take the previous year's animal. Someone born on 20 January 2025, for example, is a Wood Dragon, not a Wood Snake, because the Year of the Snake began on 29 January 2025.

This is the single most common mistake people make with the Chinese zodiac, and it catches everyone born in the first few weeks of the year. A calendar that simply flips on 1 January will give you the wrong animal and, often, the wrong element too.

Our calculator reads the exact lunar new year date for each year and places you on the right side of it. If you were born in January or early February, this is the result to trust.

How our Chinese zodiac calculator works

We use the traditional lunar calendar: your year is fixed by the lunar new year date, your animal by the twelve-year cycle, and your element by the ten-year cycle of heavenly stems. Put your birth date in and both come back together, worked out for you in a moment.

The drawings of the animals are our own, made for this site. When you have your animal, the birth chart calculator is a natural next step. It reads the Western sky at the minute you were born and adds your sun, moon and rising signs to the picture.

Which Chinese zodiac signs are compatible?

The traditional Chinese zodiac groups the twelve animals into four trines of best friends, each sharing a way of seeing the world.

  • Rat, Dragon and Monkey: quick, ambitious and full of ideas.
  • Ox, Snake and Rooster: careful, determined and loyal.
  • Tiger, Horse and Dog: brave, warm and fiercely principled.
  • Rabbit, Goat and Pig: gentle, creative and generous.

Animals six years apart sit opposite each other on the wheel, such as Rat and Horse or Ox and Goat. These pairs are the classic clash: strong pull, very different instincts. Like any opposite, they work best when each values what the other brings.

What is the Chinese zodiac animal for 2026 and 2027?

2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse, starting on 17 February 2026. Horse years are full of momentum, travel and big decisions, and Fire doubles the energy. Expect a year that rewards courage and moves fast.

2027 is the Year of the Fire Goat, starting on 6 February 2027. Goat years are gentler, creative and home-loving, a year for making things, mending things and looking after the people around you. If you were born in a Horse or Goat year, these are your years to shine.
