Strengths

  • You turn a quiet afternoon into the best bit of the day.
  • You get the shyest relative laughing.
  • You bring energy when everyone has gone sleepy after lunch.
  • You make games competitive and fun at the same time.
  • You keep the family group chat alive all year round.

Next level

  • Leave a little space for the quieter people to shine too.
  • Try one calm, still moment in the day and see how it feels.
  • Lose a game graciously at least once.

Your Christmas Eve

You are at the pub with old school friends, telling the same stories you tell every year, and they are still funny. You know everyone in the room and you have bought a round for the table you have not met yet.

You get home late, a bit merry, and insist on a carol. You might put on a festive film and quote every line. You have your jumper ready for tomorrow, the one that lights up and plays a tune, and you have checked the batteries. You have a stocking stuffed with silly things for everyone. You have also prepared a quiz for tomorrow, with rounds, and nobody else knows about it yet. It is going to be brilliant.

The big day

You are opening presents in pyjamas, loudly, and making everyone open theirs with ceremony. You do voices. You make the kids laugh until they cry.

At lunch you are in charge of the crackers and the terrible jokes, and you read them with full commitment. You give a toast that is half funny, half moving. After dinner, when everyone is sinking into the sofa, you are the one getting the board game out. You play to win, loudly, and you celebrate like it is a final. In the evening you put on a musical and sing along to every song. You go to bed hoarse and happy, and everyone agrees it would not have been Christmas without you.

Your role in the family

You are the meme supplier and the life of the party. You keep the group chat busy all year with jokes, photos and old embarrassing pictures. You are the reason family events feel fun rather than formal.

People rely on you to lift the mood, especially when the day dips or someone is having a hard time. You can smooth over an awkward silence with a joke and get the grumpy uncle playing charades. The children adore you. The grandparents pretend to be shocked and secretly love it. You are the energy in the room, and when you are not there, everyone notices, even if they do not say so.

The present you give

Something funny. A novelty gift that turns out to be really useful, a framed photo of a terrible family moment, a game everyone ends up playing all afternoon.

Your presents are about the reaction. You love watching someone open what you chose and burst out laughing. You wrap in bright paper with silly tags, and you might hide the real present inside three boxes. You are generous, spontaneous and sometimes late with your shopping, but your gifts are memorable. Years later, people still talk about the year you gave everyone matching hats. You also have a gift for making sure the person who seems left out gets the funniest present of all.

How to have your best Christmas yet

Plan one big moment: a quiz, a game, a talent show, a carol singalong. Give it a time and make it an event. It gives your energy a centre.

Then make space for others. Invite the quiet cousin to read a cracker joke or give the toast. Let someone else win the game, or at least come close. Take a moment in the afternoon to sit with someone and just talk. You might be surprised how much you enjoy it. Finally, look after yourself. Being the life of the party takes energy. A nap at four, a glass of water and an early night on Boxing Day will help you do it all again.
