The Spark

Strengths

  • You start conversations easily and steer them somewhere genuinely interesting.
  • You try new things first and make it easier for others to follow.
  • You keep your nerve when a plan goes sideways and improvise a better one.
  • You challenge lazy opinions in a way that sparks debate rather than sulking.
  • You connect people and ideas that nobody else thought to put together.

Next level

  • Pick your favourite idea of the season and see it all the way through.
  • Leave a gap in the conversation and let someone else take it somewhere.
  • Write the dull deadlines in one place where you will actually look.

The match, the fuse and the odd direction

You are the person at the table who asks "but what if we did it the other way round" and suddenly everyone is talking. You love people and you love ideas, and you are happiest when you get both at once. A dinner party with you can start with house prices and end, three hours later, with a heated debate about whether octopuses dream.

You are bold. New places, new food, new hobbies: you will try them first and report back. You get bored quickly by routine and by people who only want to talk about routine.

You are calm under pressure, which lets you improvise. When the venue cancels or the slides will not load, you riff. Most people would freeze. You find it slightly thrilling.

You are not a natural planner. Your diary has gaps and overlaps, and your best ideas often arrive at the worst moment. You also like a good argument. You will play devil's advocate just to see what happens, and you do not always notice when someone is genuinely upset rather than enjoying the sparring. The people who love you see past this. To them you are the friend who makes life larger.

Curiosity with the volume turned up

High openness with high extraversion is your signature. Your curiosity is social. You think out loud, you find ideas in other people and you test your theories in conversation. Where a quieter curious person reads the book, you start a debate about it.

High openness with low conscientiousness gives you range rather than depth. You collect fascinations and drop them when the next one arrives. That keeps you lively company, but it means some of your best ideas never leave the pub.

High extraversion with low agreeableness gives your conversation an edge. You enjoy provocation and pushback, and you can be competitive about being right. It keeps things lively, though it can tire people who wanted a gentler chat.

Low emotional sensitivity sits under all of it like a safety net. You are not afraid of looking foolish, so you take social and creative risks that others avoid. That is why you are the spark: you are willing to strike the match.

Who catches your sparks, and who puts them out

You thrive around people who play along. Friends who answer a strange question with a stranger one, who say yes to the last-minute trip, who will argue with you happily and still hug you at the end. You like people who are quick, curious and slightly unpredictable.

You are worn out by people who shut ideas down before they have breathed. The ones who answer every suggestion with "we tried that once", who want the evening planned to the minute, or who take a playful argument as a personal attack. Too much routine in a friendship or a job makes you restless fast.

Keep one or two steady people close, though. The friend who remembers your deadlines, or quietly asks whether you finished that brilliant thing, may be the one who turns your sparks into something lasting.
